~Back To Uni....Sort Of~

Photobucket

There's little that gives me more satisfaction (well, apart from the obvious things **nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more**) than learning new things.

I've spent 5 out of the last 7 years on part-time college courses. Obviously, I didn't do them for thier own sake. There was the ulterior motive of building a personal training business.

I would have liked to have enroled on an aromatherapy course this year, to broaden the scope of my massage service, but I simply couldn't afford to lose another weekday eveinig to do it.

My 'CYQ Level 3' qualification had a 4 week module about nutrition, but didn't go into as much detail as I would have liked. It's one area in which I would really like to study in some detail.

So....

I've decided to enrol on an Open University course in 'Understanding Human Nutrition'. The OU courses are pretty flexible in that you work from home, with your learning materials being mailed to you and available online.

I may well qualify for a fee concession too....which is nice...:-D

TODAY'S MOOD: Scholarly

SOUNDTRACK: T-Rex - 'The Groover'

Marc Bolan, he who weren't no square with his cork-screw hair, once wrote a song about me.....

I'm The Groover honey......

FOOTNOTE: I'm going to pick up the newly repaired Bad Boy now too....deep joy.....:-)

  1. Good luck with the course, A. Let us know what you think of it. (And the aromatherapy class sounds very interesting too!)

I'm thinking of doing a photography class online, but I'm not 100% sure yet.

I've read the student feedback on the web-site and it's pretty good.

The Open University has got an excellent reputation here in the UK, so I'm pretty hopeful that it'll be what I'm looking for.

  3. An academic nutrition course would be good....there is so much hype thrown around on that subject that is not supported by clinical research.

  4. so tell Me why...it's so damn difficult to achieve consistant weight loss EVEN with exercise after a period of success? I haven't changed My diet...continue to run, and I'm stuck at 196/97lbs? Should I change the diet? Or...? sorry..frustrated. Good luck with the OU! LOL...send Me your bill

  5. Good luck with the course(s). The aromatherapy one sounds like something I'd really get into. Are you going to start charging us if we ask you nutrition questions? lol. Hugs.

  6. Good luck mate – the Open University is an excellent resource for those who aren’t able to attend a university full-time. Indeed their courses are a good way of learning even if you don’t need the qualifications.

  7. "understanding human nutrition" where i live could be summed up easily: 1) eat lots of bacon, butter, carbs, french fries, and soda; 2) wonder why you can't keep your weight down. the end.

You're right, you wouldn't believe some of the rubbish I've heard.

    Even from other Personal Trainers!

If your diet is OK, you need to change your exercise regime. How long have you been running?

It may be simply that your body has got used to what you're doing.

You need to do some resistance work (to build some lean mass and increase your metabolic rate) as well as the cardiovascular stuff.

Try to vary the running by doing interval sprints and power-walking too.

Aromatherapy is an very interesting subject.

I may well take the course at some point.

I know a few people who've completed OU courses simply for the enjoyment of learning.

The same could be said here in the UK too.

  15. Aromatherapy? Assuming a study on things that "massage" the olfactory senses - didn't know there were actual courses taught on the subject.

I used to think the same about aromatherapy. It's a common misconception that it's purely based around the sense of smell.

During an aromatherapy massage, one of many different 'essential oils' is blended with the base (or 'carrier') massage oil.

Each essential oil does have it's own unique odour, but it is also actually absorbed into the body.

This is where being correctly qualified is paramount importance. Some essential oils can have detrimental effects to the health of the client if they are on certain drugs or if they have certain medical conditions.

  17. What an excellent decision, good for you! Learning is fun and usually profitable in more ways than one. :)

  18. I have certainly learned a lot about nutrition since I started my healthier living journey about 6 weeks ago. My eating habits have changed tremendously. I never realized all the sodium I put in my body or all the fat!

I love the site I'm on, it calculates everything for me and breaks it all down. I've just never cared before. I'm glad my body has stuck with me all these years, even though I've put it through so much abuse :) Being a personal trainer must be very challenging. What an awesome job!

Good luck with the new courses. Have a great day too.

  19. I started 1 & 1/2 years ago. Slowly building distance..1 mile (barely able to complete) has led to up to 4..depending on the time I can devote. I run when I can (usually 2 miles)...when not on the road. Sometimes 5 days a week..sometimes only 1...My job prevents a steady/predictable routine. Thank you for your advice up above!

  20. I hate to learn new things. It makes me feel insecure.

  21. Excellent - never too old to learn new things, it will only make you a richer person (richer in terms of education, poorer in terms of finance) lol :)
